The nice thing that I have found about the lace rock is that it is much easier to build more caves with. Depends on what kind of Cichlids. Mbuna require lots of rocks. If Mbuna, you should probably stack rocks about 50-75% of the way high in your tank. If peacocks/haps, I would stack 25-50% high and leave a decent amount of sand open for them to dig around in. If South American Cichlids, then you don't need a lot of rocks.

Texas Holey Rock is a very dense rock which does not allow microbes to penetrate the surface (think of ocean live rock as a sponge and harbor for bacterial colonies). Its not porus....Used for a Fish only tank FO tank i guess you could but not for a reef. Its heavy too.

It raises the tap PH from 7.6 to 8.2/8.3, no higher. If your tap is 8.2 with buffering capacities, I doubt there will be much effect on your tank water.
